Description
The Village Stocks and nearby hydrant, located outside No. 13 Church Hill, are village features from the 19th century. The stocks consist of oak panels with iron bindings and have four leg holes. Immediately to the south is a cast iron water hydrant, which has a sunken base and a fluted pillar with a spout at the top. The hydrant also features a ring with a valve knob and a domical top with a bud finial. This hydrant is one of several that remain in the parish, but it is the only one included in the listing. The stocks were last used in the mid-19th century and were removed by a local gentlewoman in 1908. After several months of discussion, they were replaced with the current version, complete with its present cover.
