Loft And Stables About 20 Metres East Of Leylands Farmhouse

This building is a loft over stables located about 20 meters east of Leylands Farmhouse, dating from around 1900 and restored around 1983. It is possibly designed by Wilmots of Wellington. The structure features random rubble chert stone with a main elevation of red brick laid in Flemish bond, and a roof covered with West Somerset slates that has overhanging eaves. The building is L-shaped with two storeys and consists of eight bays for the loft and two bays for the stables. There is a square-headed loft opening below the eaves, semicircular-headed stable doorways in the re-entrant angle, a square-headed opening above the stable door, and segmental-headed double doors beyond. The right gable end has a segmental-headed loft door that is accessed by a lateral flight of steps. Inside, there is a king post roof, which was reroofed and slated after a fire. This is a fine example of farm buildings that utilize local bricks from Pooles yard at Nynehead.
