Description
Ford Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to the 16th century, with enlargements made in the 18th century. The south front was refenestrated in the early 19th century, and the building was restored in the late 20th century. It features roughcast over rubble, a brick agricultural wing, and slate roofs, with a half-hipped west wing. An external stack is located at the east gable end, marked by a lean-to addition, and the upper part of the stack has been rebuilt in brick. There is also a brick stack for the hall fireplace that rises from the eaves in the west wing.
The layout suggests it may have originally been an open hall house, with a two-bay west wing and an agricultural north-east wing, although the north-west agricultural wing has been demolished. The south front has two storeys and is arranged in a 1:3 bay pattern, featuring 16-pane sash windows on the first floor and 20-pane windows on the ground floor, along with a casement window in the lean-to addition that masks the external stack. The main entrance is located at the centre, with a flat-roofed wooden columnar porch and a panelled door.
On the rear elevation, there is a chamfered arched door frame and a three-bay brick agricultural wing that abuts the farmhouse. Inside, the hall ceiling is adorned with good moulded beams that form three rectangular panels, lacking the expected cross beam for a compartment ceiling. The south room of the adjoining wing has a nine-panel chamfered compartment ceiling and a stud and panel partition. The northern room features a steeply chamfered lateral beam with step and run-out stops, as well as a blocked doorway on the north front. There is evidence of three pairs of jointed cruck trusses, although they are not visible in the roof space. The farmhouse appears to have been reroofed when the south front was refenestrated.
