Description
The Wellington School War Memorial Chapel is a school chapel built between 1928 and 1931, designed by C. H. Biddulph-Pinchard. It is constructed of irregular bond red brick with stone dressings and features a flat roof concealed behind a parapet. The chapel has a rectangular single-cell plan, with the altar located at the west end and choir stalls and an organ in a gallery over the entrance vestibule at the east end. The architectural style is Perpendicular Tudor.
The exterior includes six bays on the north and south sides, each with 3-light Perpendicular traceried windows set in 4-centred arches, separated by buttresses topped with tall crocketed pinnacles. There is a moulded stone plinth weathering and a string course below the parapet. The west end features a larger 5-light window with a 2-centred arch and reticulated tracery, flanked by buttresses and a statue niche above, which is surmounted by a stone cross. The east end has a Tudor arch door in a moulded stone frame, with a stone plaque above and flanked by iron lamps.
Inside, the chapel is richly decorated with finely traceried carved wooden wall panels that have elaborately decorated canopies made of moulded plaster, all painted and gilded. The panels bear the names of old boys who were killed in the First World War. The galleried choir stalls and organ loft are similarly decorated, with a canopied reredos and a carved stone altar. The bench ends and stall fronts are also carved and traceried. The roof features a series of carved and moulded tie-beams on corbels, supporting a panelled roof with moulded ribs, all painted and gilded. The intricate carving was done by F.J. Hunt of Henlade, Taunton.
