Description
Gerbstone Manor is a manor house dating to the late 16th century, with later additions from the 17th century. It was extensively restored around 1935 by Hubert Lidbetter for Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Fox. The house is constructed of squared and coursed chert stone with Ham stone dressings, and has steeply pitched slate roofs with coped verges and stone stacks. It follows a U-plan with shallow projecting gable ends on the east front, and a projecting porch attached to the south range. The east front has two storeys, with an attic to the south range, and is arranged with a 1:1:2:1 bay arrangement, with gabled outer bays. A full-height gabled porch is situated to the right of the hall. The windows are mostly 3- and 4-light chamfered stone mullioned windows with hoodmoulds, with a 2-light leaded window in the porch. The porch features a moulded ogee-headed outer doorway and a square-headed chamfered inner doorway with an early door. The south front has a 2:1:2 bay arrangement, featuring a 2-light window within a gabled centre, a 5-light window below, a 3-light window to the right, and a 3-light window to the left end bay. A moulded Tudor arch-headed doorway is situated adjoining the centre bay, and a small square stair light is to the left. The interior includes a plank and muntin screen to the cross passage, a good moulded depressed Tudor arch head to the hall fireplace, and an 8-panel steeply chamfered compartment ceiling with exposed joists. Other rooms contain chamfered beams, which were largely renewed. The manor is notable as a high-quality example of a 1930s restoration of a 16th-century vernacular building.
