Description

The Warren is a farmhouse that has been enlarged to serve as both a brewery and a dwelling. It dates from the 17th century, with expansions made in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The dwelling features blue lias random rubble with a brick parapet at the west end of the original block, and brick surrounds to the window openings, which were originally rendered. The addition has a concrete tile roof with coped verges, while the original block has a slate roof behind the parapet and brick stacks at the gable ends.

The brewery is designed in an L-shape, with the original farmhouse running roughly west-east and facing the road. The east end has been enlarged to include the brewery, and there is a set-back two-bay wing at the north-east end. The building is two storeys high, with the wing only lit in the left-hand bay on the facade. It features 16-pane sash windows, and the right half is largely obscured by the earlier block. A small doorway is set below the eaves on the right, providing access to the roof, and there is a small stair light on the gable end. The west front has 16-pane sash windows, a panelled door with a fanlight, and panelled reveals to the left.

The rear elevation of the north-east wing has three bays with 16-pane sash windows, and the first floor center features a semi-circular headed sash window with a 20th-century semi-circular headed doorway below. The east end of the former brewery is three and two storeys high, with four bays and gable-fronted first and third bays on the left that have oeil-de-boeuf windows in the gable ends. The fenestration is mixed, including 12 and 16-pane sash windows and leaded iron casements, with keystones above the window openings in the left-hand bay.

Inside, the dwelling is partially visible, with the center of the south front containing the original kitchen, which has a large chamfered lintel over the fireplace and a small cupboard set into the south wall. It features 18th-century doors and hinges, a 19th-century stick stair, and panelled reveals to the windows in the early 19th-century addition. The brewery interior has not been seen. Overall, The Warren is a notable group of historic and architectural interest.
