Description

Fosse Cottage is a house believed to date back to the 16th century, though it has been significantly altered and enlarged in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed from Ham stone and blue lias, with randomly placed rubble and Ham stone dressings. The east addition features tile hanging, and the roofs are covered with slate, showcasing overhanging eaves and decorative bargeboards. A 19th-century external stone stack is located at the west gable end, while a large lateral brick stack is found on the east wall of the central range, along with another brick stack at the rear of the east parallel range.

The house is arranged in an L-plan facing north-west, with a parallel range set back on the east front. It has two storeys and features a symmetrical facade with one bay on the left, one bay in the center, and two bays on the right. The first floor includes a left-side addition with a mullioned and transomed window, and a 2-light ogee-headed mullioned window on the right. The remaining windows are Tudor arched head mullioned windows, with two 2-light windows on the right. The ground floor on the left is obscured by a 20th-century flat-roofed conservatory, while on the right there is a 3-light window, a single light window to the left, and another 3-light window next to a moulded stone doorway with a late medieval-style plank door. This doorway is sheltered by a lean-to clay-tiled porch supported by wooden columns set on a rubble plinth. A blank shield is present in the chimney breast at the west gable end. The interior has not been seen, and the cottage is said to be located on the site of a former church house.
