Description

The stables at No 9 Stoke Road are outbuildings that include a former basket makers workshop, stables, and a coach house. They date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century and are constructed of painted brick in Flemish bond with a hipped slate roof. The buildings consist of two independently roofed blocks that are joined and face west. On the left is the former basket makers workshop, which has a room above it, while the right side contains a loft over the stables and coach house.

The north front, which faces the road, is two storeys high and features a single bay. There is a bevelled arris to the wall on the right, with a rectangular recess on the first floor that contains a small pointed arch and a multi-paned window. The ground floor has a 4-pane sash window.

On the right return, or west front, there is a 20th-century window on the left side of the first floor, and on the ground floor, a square-headed doorway leads into the building. To the right, a 15-pane window lights the former basket makers workshop. Under the lower roof level, there is a loft opening in the centre, a square-headed double door on the left, and an elliptical-headed entrance to the coach house with double doors. The basket makers workshop has also served as an abattoir in the 20th century.
