Description
The Old Pump House, likely dating from the 17th century, is a small row of cottages that were rebuilt as pump-rooms in 1752. It is a single storey building with an attic in the gable, constructed from random rubble and brick with ashlar dressings. The gable end features quoin pilasters that support an entablature and a panelled parapet. In the centre, there is a blocked round-headed arch with rusticated quoins and voussoirs. The sides are set back and have blind windows with moulded architraves and keystones, along with a high moulded plinth.
The return elevation displays a similar style but includes sash windows with glazing bars, a round-headed entrance flanked by pilasters and topped with a triangular pediment. It also has a semi-circular fanlight with intersecting tracery and double doors, each with three panels (two of which have been removed and replaced with glazing). The west part of the building retains its original two storeys and is made of painted brick with a pantile roof and three-light casements, along with blocked-up archways. This building served as the Pump House where chalybeate waters were consumed during Glastonbury's brief period of popularity as a spa in the mid-18th century. The Copper Beech and Old Pump House together create a notable group.
