Description

St Mary's Cottage is a farmhouse that dates back to the 16th century, with enlargements made in the 17th century and refenestration occurring in the late 19th to early 20th century. The building is rendered over cob and ironstone random rubble, featuring a double Roman tiled roof with a bell-cast on the original block and a hipped slate roof addition on the right gable end. The cross wing is slightly higher than the main block and has brick stacks at the gable ends and to the right of the cross passage. The layout is 'L'-shaped, consisting of three cells and a cross passage, with the gable end facing the road and a one-bay addition on the left gable end. The cottage is two storeys tall with two bays on the front and one bay on the side; it has three-light casements that are mullioned and transomed on the ground floor, while the right gable end is unlit. There is a small glazed opening to the left gable end fireplace bay and another small glazed opening on the first floor of the single bay addition at the left gable end. The centre of the original block features a plank door. Inside, there is a chamfered lintel and chamfered stone jambs to the cross passage fireplace, a four-panel compartment ceiling with steeply chamfered beams, and a jointed cruck truss roof in the original block. The upper end has been altered by the insertion of a stair.
