Description
The Kingston St Mary War Memorial is a First World War memorial, likely built in the early 1920s, with an additional inscription added after the Second World War. It is made of dressed granite and is located within the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin church. The memorial takes the form of a Latin cross, featuring a stone sword in relief on the shaft. It stands on a square plinth with broach stops, which is supported by an octagonal three-stepped base. On the front (south) face of the plinth, there is a lead plaque inscribed with: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF/ KINGSTON/ WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919." The other sides of the plinth display plaques recording the names of the Fallen. Additionally, the upper step of the base has another plaque inscribed: "AND/ IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR/ 1939-1945/ NAMES."
