Description

Hill Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations and enlargements made in the early 18th century and mid-19th century. The building features roughcast over random rubble and has triple Roman tiled roofs that are half hipped on the west front. There is a large external stack on the south gable end, along with brick stacks on the northeast and west gable ends, and to the left of the cross passage. The plan of the farmhouse is not clear without an internal inspection but consists of a three-cell and cross passage range lying east-west, with northeast and southwest wings.

The south front of the farmhouse is two storeys high and has a layout of one bay to the left and three bays to the right. To the right of the cross wing external stack, there is a 12-pane sash window, with a projection to the left and a buttress to the right. Three irregularly placed 12-pane sash windows are located to the right. On the ground floor, there is a left sash window with marginal glazing bars, a 12-pane sash window to the left, and a 16-pane sash window to the right of the entrance. The entrance features a fine shell hood porch that is carried on curved console brackets and supported by later turned wooden piers, with half-glazed double doors that are currently covered in plastic and forming part of a temporary greenhouse as of May 1984.

On the north elevation, there is a 18th-century panelled door and some 16-pane sash windows. The carving on the shell hood porch resembles that on the staircase at The Manor House in Kingston St Mary and is likely the work of the same craftsmen, dating around 1702. The interior has not been seen.
