Description
Westhay is a farmhouse located in Kingston St Mary, originally built in the late 17th century and enlarged in the early 18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. The exterior features rough cast over rubble, with the west gable end rebuilt in brick. It has a double Roman tiled roof and brick stacks on the east gable end and to the left of the cross passage. The layout consists of three cells and a cross passage, with a northwest kitchen wing and an extension on the north front.
The south front of the farmhouse is two storeys high with a 1:4 bay arrangement. The left end bay has a gabled front, and the first floor features 16-pane sash windows, except for a 12-pane sash window above the entrance. The ground floor includes several panelled French windows, with the entrance located in the second bay from the right, featuring a glazed 20th-century door, fanlight, and a trelliswork porch. To the left, there is a long return of the kitchen wing and an adjoining cottage that faces the road.
The interior has not been sighted but is reported to contain an altered six-panel compartment ceiling, a moulded four-panel compartment ceiling at the test end, and remnants of a jointed cruck truss roof. The sure trusses are archbraced with an intermediate truss of cusped enlarged common rafters notched over the purlins, similar to those at Giffords in Langford, Norton Fitzwarren.
