Description

Acklands is a farmhouse that dates from the late 16th to early 17th century and has been enlarged since its original construction. The building is roughcast with a double Roman tiled roof and features a large external stack on the right gable end, as well as roughcast stacks located between the first and second bays on the right and to the left of the entrance. The original plan is thought to have been a two-cell structure with a cross passage, which was later extended to a three-cell layout with the rear wall built out to include winder stairs.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has three bays on the right and one bay on the left. The windows are all late 20th-century wooden casements, either three or four lights, with plate glass. The wall between the first and second bays on the right breaks forward, and the entrance is located in the second bay on the left. There is a hipped pantiled porch supported by wooden columns with triangular plinths. The left return features a gable end that has been rebuilt in brick, and there is an outshot at the rear.

Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain a timber-framed wattle and daub partition in the cross passage on the right. The axial ceiling beams in the central room, which was originally the kitchen, are chamfered with step and run-out stops. There is a timber-framed partition along the rear wall and that of the room beyond. To the left of the cross passage, there is a four-panel compartment ceiling that does not extend to the fireplace bressumer and may be reused. The building is also said to contain remains of a jointed cruck truss roof.
