Description
The John Symes memorial is located in the churchyard about 4 meters south of the south aisle of the Church of St John the Baptist in Hatch Beauchamp. This memorial features an obelisk made of Ham stone, which stands on a concave moulded base set on a pedestal. The obelisk is dated 1688 and 1798. The dado on the north side is inscribed with "WH 1688," while the west side reads, "in memory of John Symes.... died 1798, servant .... of John Collins Esq for upwards of 34 years." The memorial is approximately 3.5 meters high. John Collins is noted for building Hatch Court, and it is said that the obelisk has been reset at some point.
