Description

The monument to Mary Pittman is located in the churchyard about 6 meters south-west of the chancel of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin. This Grade II listed headstone and grave kerbing is dated 1718 and is made of Ham stone and white lias. It features a simple oblong upright headstone with a cambered top, displaying high-quality and well-preserved lettering on the east side. The inscription reads: "Here Lyeth the Body of Mary the wife of John Pittman of this Parish who Departed this life The 22 day of March Anno Dom 17/1819, Beehold y place Where I do ly, As thou art now so once was I, As I am now so shall thou be, prepare for death and follow mee (sic)."
