Description
Summerlands Hospital, specifically the main block, is a workhouse administration building that dates back to 1837. It features local stonework that is cut and squared, with plain Ham stone used for the quoins and window dressings. The roof is hipped and covered with Welsh slate, and it has two brick chimney stacks that are set asymmetrically. The building is two stories tall and has an 11-bay facade arranged in a 3:1:3:1:3 pattern, with single offsets at bays 4 and 8 and double offsets at bays 5-7. There is a simple pediment above the central projection, which displays the dates 1837 and 1968. The windows are sliding sash; those on the ground floor have two upper panes and one lower pane, while the first-floor windows have three upper panes and two lower panes. The central ground floor window has a slightly proud surround with a crude pediment above it. There are two matching single-storey wings on either side of the main block. The rear elevation has been significantly altered, and the interior was not seen. Other buildings on the site are not of interest. This structure was formerly part of the Yeovil Union Public Assistance Institution, also known as the Poor Law House, with the remainder of the workhouse and its hospital now demolished.
