Description
The Old House is a cottage that possibly dates back to the 16th century, with significant alterations made in the 17th century. It is constructed from random local stone and features end pilasters beneath gable copings. The building has an early roof frame covered with thatch and two end chimney stacks. It stands two storeys tall, with a random front elevation that includes an off-centre six-panelled door set in an arched recess of uncertain date. The ground floor has simple modern two- and three-light casement windows, which are placed under reconstructed stone lintels.
To the west, there is a two-storey extension with a random stone wall, a Welsh slated roof, a stone ridge, and an ornamental finial on the west gable coping. This extension features an arched opening with garage doors at ground level and simple timber casement windows, one of which has an arched stone head. The interior has not been seen, but it is believed to be a Somerset-plan cottage with three rooms in a line and a cross passage, which was reduced in length in the 17th century. Additionally, a 19th-century coach house was incorporated into the house. For a detailed description of the roof structure, refer to the report by R.G. Gilson in the National Monuments Record.
