Description

The Preston Plucknett War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920 by the Ham Hill Company, with additional inscriptions added after the Second World War. It was restored in 2014 and is constructed of Hamstone.

The memorial has a square plan and is located within a small enclosed garden that is raised above the road. It features a three-stepped base supporting a square plinth with chamfered corners and top. The tapering shaft is also chamfered and culminates in a simple Latin cross. The south face of the plinth is inscribed in black painted lettering: "TO THE IMMORTAL MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE/ WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-18./ 'THEIR NAMES LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.'" The names of those who lost their lives are recorded on the west and east sides of the plinth, while the rear face reads: "THIS WAYSIDE CROSS/ WAS ERECTED BY MANY/ GRATEFUL SUBSCRIBERS." The names of two men who died during the Second World War are inscribed on the upper step of the base.

The memorial is set within a small garden that features a low stone boundary with stone copings along the roadside. A flight of four stone steps leads up to the memorial from the center of the wall, and the north, west, and east sides of the garden are bordered by low metal railings.
