Description

Knapp House, dating from before 1675, is a substantial Somerset cross-passage house. The front and sides are constructed of local stone, squared and cut, while the rear wall is a circa 1950 brick replacement for original cob. The roof is thatched, and there are brick chimney stacks. The house is two storeys, though the kitchen appears to have originated as a single-storey structure. The main entrance elevation is dominated by a late 19th-century two-storey bay window with sashes. The front door, to the left of this bay, features six reeded panels set within a heavy frame with plain reveals. To the left of the door is an early 18th-century stone mullioned kitchen window with hollow chamfered details. The other ground floor windows to the right of the bay are late 18th-century 12-pane sash windows, separated from the first floor by a stone string course. The first floor windows have unmoulded mullioned surrounds with small leaded panes; a matching window is also located to the left of the bay. The interior layout, as reported, features a main room with a fireplace backing onto the passage, another room and fireplace beyond that, and the kitchen across the passage. A stone boundary wall, approximately 1.5 metres high, runs along the north and east boundaries, with two stone gate piers. These piers have moulded tops and ball finials. The building possesses group value due to its historical and architectural significance.
