Description
Higher Preston Farm House is a farmhouse built in 1649, although it has been modified since its construction. The building is made of Ham Stone, laid in random courses with a fine face, and features a plain clay tile roof between coped gables. There are two end chimneys and one centrally located chimney that has been rebuilt in brick.
The main south facade displays irregular window placements. The house is two stories high and includes a four-light stone mullioned window with ovolo mouldings and a label above it, along with an off-centre door that has been relocated. To the right, there are two two-light mullioned windows with hollow chamfers. On the first floor, there are five 20th-century double windows.
On the north facade, which faces the street, there are two three-light and one four-light stone mullioned windows featuring large rectangular leaded panes, all with hollow chamfer moulding and labels above. At the first floor level, there are two three-light wooden casements, one of which has ovolo mouldings, both also with leaded panes.
The interior has not been inspected, but Sir R Hall mentions a lintel in the kitchen fireplace dated 1649 and elm ceiling beams with scroll stops to the chamfers. The lean-to on the east side and all outbuildings are considered to be of little interest.
