Description

A pair of semi-detached cottages dated approximately 1850, located on Preston Road in Yeovil. The cottages were built using local stone, cut and squared, with plain ashlar quoins and dressings. The roofs are covered in plain clay tiles, punctuated by ornamental bands of fish-scale tiles, and feature central and end chimney stacks of plain brick. Each house has two bays, with the outer bays slightly projecting. Number 74 has French doors set within an arched head, with the main entrance to the rear. Number 76 has a later wood porch. Both doorways have small windows to either side. The ground floor windows are simple chamfered mullioned 3-light windows, lacking hood mouldings. The outer first floor windows are 3-light, with the central light taller, while the inner windows are 2-light. Small gable windows are present in the attics. Small gables adorn the inner windows, while the outer bays have full gables, all featuring ornamental bargeboards; the larger gable of Number 76 has a modified bargeboard pattern. A west-side extension to Number 76 is constructed in ashlar stonework, featuring a projecting two-story angled bay with sliding sash windows and a matching decorated gable. The interiors were not inspected during listing. Outbuildings belonging to both properties are not considered to be of particular interest.
