Description

Brook Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, enlarged in the 17th century, and restored in 1984. It is constructed of random rubble lias and sandstone, with quoins on the upper half of the right-hand block and a rendered south-west gable end. The building features a thatched roof, which is higher on the right side, and has brick stacks at the gable ends and the left gable end of the right block.

The farmhouse has one and a half storeys and faces north-west, with a layout that is not clear without an internal inspection. It has three bays on the left block, which includes two large raking buttresses that reach up to the eaves. The windows rise from the eaves and include ovolo moulded mullioned windows flanking an unusual two-light leaded casement with a shouldered architrave. To the right, there is a tiny wooden two-light steeply chamfered mullioned window, along with a three-light ovolo moulded casement. There is also a two-light opening beside it.

On the ground floor, the right side features two two-light steeply chamfered mullioned casements and a four-light ovolo moulded window beyond. The entrance to the right-hand block has a rusticated surround and a thatched hooded porch, with a 19th-century panelled door and two later windows beyond. The rear elevation has three ovolo moulded mullioned windows, while the rest of the fenestration is 20th century. The farmhouse is noted for being an unusual survival with a large number of 17th-century mullioned windows.
