Description
Grange Court, shown on the Ordnance Survey map as The Mews, is a mid-18th century building that originally served as stables for Barton Grange. It is now a dwelling and antique shop. The structure is roughcast over rubble, with ashlar Ham stone dressings and bitumen-covered hipped slate roofs. Brick stacks rise from the eaves on the main block and are set in from the hipped roofs of the wings.
The building is arranged in a U-plan, originally featuring a central carriage house with accommodation above, flanked by wings that contained stables with heated tack rooms in the outer bays. The left wing is now a dwelling, while the right serves as an antique shop, with store rooms in the center. The central section is two stories tall, while the wings are single story, comprising one bay in the center and three bays in total.
The gable ends of the wings feature three semi-circular headed niches, interrupted by a flat string band. The left side has a 20th-century window, while the right retains an original lunette window. The center has three semi-circular headed windows on the first floor and two large semi-circular headed recessed panels with carriageway entrances on the ground floor, along with two smaller niches in the outer bays, all connected by a flat string as an entablature. There are 20th-century double doors and an ashlar coat of arms added to the left, which is unconnected with the original owners of the property.
The building has three bay re-entrant angles, with a 20th-century door inserted in the left angle. The right carriageway leads to the tack room, with some surviving panelling in the left stables. The rear features 20th-century fenestration.
