Description

A U-shaped range of farm buildings, dating to 1802 and altered around 1980, stands to the south west of Newhall Grange, including a section now known as 'The Mews'. The buildings are constructed of dressed sandstone with stone slate eaves to a pantile roof, though the Mews section has 20th-century pantiles. The design primarily encloses a yard facing Newhall Grange.

The central range, facing the yard, originally comprised a cowhouse and stable, with a hayloft. It features a doorway with a cambered arch on the left, and six other square-headed doorways with blocked ashlar surrounds. A door lintel near the centre displays initials and the date '1802'. The first floor has a central blind quatrefoil flanked by slit vents, with alternate square and circular pitching holes. Some openings are boarded, while others are blind. A moulded eaves band runs along the top. To the left, this range continues as a barn, with a central break forward having a filled-in round-arched waggon entrance. Square hatches to the first floor have lintels styled as voussoirs. The barn range has a hipped roof.

The range opposite, now forming ‘The Mews’, has a similar break forward with a waggon entrance, now fitted with a 20th-century casement window. An additional storey has been added above the eaves band, featuring a square-headed window flanked by blind oculi, indicating a corresponding storey had previously been removed over the barn. Outer bays have 20th-century sash windows to each floor, with plain lintels and projecting sills.

An open-fronted shelter shed on the right has wooden posts and a feeding rack. The left bay is incorporated into 'The Mews' and serves as a garage. This section has hipped roofs, with a stack and weathervane on the right. The rear entrance front of 'The Mews' is in a matching style, with a canopied entrance formed beneath the central arch. The rear of the barn range has a filled-in waggon entrance with the original voussoirs removed. The buildings are included for their contribution to the group value of the area.
