Description

Quarkhill Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the late 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th century and extensive changes and enlargements in the late 20th century. It is constructed from red sandstone random rubble and features a Westmorland green slate roof, with a circular stack located in the third bay on the left. The original structure is two storeys high and consists of eight bays. All the windows are late 20th century wooden casement windows, either two or three lights, set under wooden lintels. The ground floor includes a semicircular, flat-roofed bow window with metal glazing bars in the penultimate bay on the right.

Inside, the farmhouse has been extensively modernised. It features steeply chamfered beams and thin, chamfered beams on either side of a blocked cross passage in the sitting room, which contains a screen to the east, a two-centred arch doorway, and a massive stud with a bressumer and empty panels. The stud has medieval painting believed to depict the Trinity. The roof structure includes five pairs of jointed crucks with collar trusses and purlins, positioned above and below. The exterior, dating from the 20th century, contains elements of a very interesting late medieval house.
