Description
Culverhays Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that has been extensively altered in the late 20th century. The building features roughcast over random rubble, a wooden wall plate, and thatched roofs, with the block to the left having a higher roof. There are stone stacks at the left gable ends.
The plan consists of two cells to the left of a cross passage, with an independently roofed block to the right that has been much altered and is therefore not included in the listing, although it was originally part of the building. The evolution of the three independently roofed blocks is unclear. The farmhouse is one and a half storeys high, with all windows dating from the 20th century. It has three three-light dormers, one on the right with a weatherboarded gable. The ground floor contains two three-light windows in the left block and a two-light window on the right, along with a partially glazed 20th-century door in the left end bay. There is a thatched hipped porch and a central plank door in a brick projection with sidelights and raking brick buttresses, while the right return is weatherboarded with a cat slide roof. The main entrance is now in a lean-to addition on the right, and there is a bread oven on the left return.
Inside, there is evidence of a plank screen to the left of the cross passage, chamfered beads with enriched stops, and exposed rafters, most of which have been renewed. The interior also features an open fireplace and chamfered beams in the outer room, along with another open fireplace.
