Description

This barn, located about 20 metres northeast of Dowlish Manor Farmhouse, is likely from the late 18th century but stands on earlier foundations. It is constructed from ham stone rubble, featuring large ashlar stones at the base, and has a Welsh slate roof with stepped, coped end gables that have gabletted finials, while the roof over the flank projection is hipped. The barn is built into rising ground, with the south elevation showing two projecting sections. The north elevation consists of seven bays, with upper doors in bays one and two, a modified full-height doorway in bay three, a segmental-arched doorway in bay four, a 20th-century sliding door in bay five with a three-light casement above it, and blocked openings in upper bay six and lower bay seven. The south elevation features a tall chamfered plinth and four vent slits to the west of the first projection, which has a large segmental-arched louvred opening and side approach stairs. Between the projections, there are two low-level openings, followed by a matching second projection without a side stair, then four ventilation slits to the east, along with the remains of a lean-to building. The roof contains what appear to be 19th-century trusses of various types, including some with key posts and some with collar beams. The projections have threshing floors, and there are some inserted floors supported by timber posts and brick piers.
