Description

The Mount is a house dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with some alterations from the 19th century. It is constructed of cob and coarsed limestone rubble, rendered at the front, and features a gabled thatch roof. The right end and ridge have 19th-century brick stacks, while the central axial stack has been truncated. The house has a three-unit plan with a central hall that has an axial stack backing onto a through-passage to the right, which is blocked at the front.

It is one storey with an attic and has a four-window range, including a mid-20th-century window and mullioned windows with two-light casements. There are similar casements in eyebrow dormers, and a door is located to the right of centre. A 19th-century rear outshut with a pantile roof adjoins a 20th-century door to the rear left.

Inside, the house features stop-chamfered beams and a jointed-cruck roof. The ground floor has stone flags, while the first floor has old oak boards. In the inner room on the left, there is a chamfered bressummer over an open fireplace with a bread oven. A plank and muntin screen divides this room from the hall, featuring chamfered details and an arched doorway. The hall stack has a chamfered bressummer beneath a timber-framed smoke hood, which is a rare example, with wattle and daub infill. To the right of the hall stack, there is a transverse beam with morticing for a former plank and muntin screen on the right of the through passage. An original plank door leads to the attic.
