Description
No. 22, also known as Grove House, is a detached house dating from the 18th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. The house is built of local stone, with dressings of Doulting stone, and has a plain clay tile roof with coped gables and brick end chimney stacks. It has an 'L' shape, two storeys and attic space, and originally comprised three bays. The ground floor has four-pane sash windows in the outer bays, featuring flat, voussoir-headed surrounds. A six-panel door, raised two steps, is located between the outer bays and is surrounded by a stone surround of flat Doric pilasters, an entablature and a pediment. Above the door are three sixteen-pane sash windows, set below a deep rendered band course. There are three early 20th-century hipped dormer windows in the roof. A projection to the rear features sixteen-pane sash windows. The interior has not been inspected. The front wing walls, approximately 2 metres long and 2 metres high, connect to low stone front boundary walls. Wrought iron railings, standing approximately 1.1 metres high, are set into these walls and have barbed and waisted arrowhead finials, with sweeps up to the gateway. These railings contribute to the setting of the house and the character of the street.
