Description
Bathealton War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920 and altered after the Second World War. It is made of local stone and features a short Celtic wheel cross. The arms of the cross are decorated with relief-carved interlacing, and there is a moulded central boss. The shaft of the cross displays a relief-carved cipher of the initials SH, along with the inscription: TO THE / MEMORY OF / THOSE WHO / FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918 / 1939 – 1945. This shaft rests on a tapering square base, which is inscribed with the names of four casualties from the First World War, stating: OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / AND / followed by the name of the soldier who died in the Second World War. The base is set on a single tapering step, which bears the inscription: GOD PROVED THEM AND FOUND THEM WORTHY FOR HIMSELF.
