Description

The Church of St Nicholas is a Grade II* listed building, dating from around 1500 with a mid-17th century addition, and was restored in 1875. It is constructed of red sandstone random rubble, with a rendered tower and 19th-century tiled roofs. The church features a three-bay nave with a chapel extending from the south aisle, a south porch, and a west tower, along with a 17th-century north projection.

The three-stage tower has a crenellated parapet and setback buttresses that are unrendered. It includes a Tudor arch doorway with a three-light window above, which is reticulated like the east window. The south window is a three-light square-headed window with Tudor arch heads. A gabled 19th-century porch provides access to the west door of the south aisle. On the north side, there is an annex that has a blocked doorway dated 1659, featuring gothic survival two-light trefoil-headed, ovolo moulded windows.

Inside, the church is plastered, with a major feature being a two-bay wooden arcade that was restored in the 19th century, showcasing Tudor arches. There is a wide semi-circular entry into the north projection with a moulded arch, a priest's door to the north, a piscina in the south chapel, and two brasses commemorating Richard and Agnes Bluett, a farmer who died in 1524, though their epitaphs are missing. The wooden pulpit is dated 1616, and there is a Perpendicular pedestal font along with a 17th-century door. Roger Wood of Overtown, Kittisford, bequeathed £200 in his will of 3 September 1657 for the construction of a new aisle in the church, which led to the creation of the north annex.
