Description
Rose Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, located in Appley, Stawley. The building is rendered with a slate roof and features a brick stack on the left and rendered wall on the right. It stands two storeys high with three bays on one side and one bay on the other. The cottage has 20th-century casement windows, with a small two-light moulded mullion window in the outer bay on the right and a similar window in the gable end of the right return elevation. A 20th-century plank door is situated at the center. There is an outshut at the rear.
Inside, the ground floor is divided by a stud and plank screen, with a newel stair beside the chimney bay. The fireplace includes a bread oven, a summer fireplace, and an unusually tall bacon smoking chamber, although access from the fireplace is now blocked by a door in the outshut. Upstairs, there is a small piece of plaster decoration in the right bedroom and two pairs of jointed crucks. This cottage has been finely restored and is notable for retaining many original features.
