Description
Whipples Farmhouse is a building dating from the 16th or 17th century, constructed from plastered stone rubble, likely with cob, and features stone rubble stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick. The roof is slate, having originally been thatch. The house appears to have a three-room-and-through-passage layout, facing south-south-east. The right (east) end contains an unheated inner room. The hall features an axial stack that backs onto the passage, and there is a newel stair turret that projects to the rear. The service end room, likely a kitchen, has a gable-end stack. Although an internal inspection was not possible during the survey, it is believed that the house began as some form of open hall house in the 16th century. The exterior has an irregular four-window front with 19th and 20th-century casements that include glazing bars. The passage front doorway is located left of centre, behind a 20th-century conservatory. The roof is gable-ended, and there are no rear windows except for a small light to the newel stair. An internal inspection is recommended before any work is carried out, as there may be 16th and 17th-century carpentry details that could be at risk of being destroyed.
