Description

The Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade II* listed building dating from the 15th century. The north aisle, tower, and chancel were rebuilt, while the nave was restored around 1874. It is constructed from random rubble red sandstone with Ham stone dressings, and features tiled roofs that were installed around 1970 over the nave and in the late 19th century over the chancel. The church has a three-bay nave with a north aisle and a Lady chapel, alongside the earlier nave and chancel, a south porch, and a west tower. The three-stage tower has a crenellated parapet, offset buttresses, and a stair turret. The south side of the chancel features two-light windows flanking a pointed arch doorway, and a large six-light Perpendicular window divided into two three-light sub arches east of the porch. The remaining windows are three-light Perpendicular. There is an annex on the north aisle and a projection for the rood loft stairs. The gabled south porch is from the 19th century. Inside, the church is rendered with a three-bay aisle, capitals featuring leaf bands, and depressed pointed arches. The pulpit has painted stone crocketed decoration on its three-sided body, supported by a column, and is accessed by stairs with a handrail, which were imported from Barnstaple. The windows in the Lady chapel, dating from the late 19th century, are notable for including portraits of the donors and dedicatees. The restoration of 1874 was funded by the incumbent, Rev. Charles Penrose Quicke.
