Description
Eyewell House is a detached house built between 1924 and 1925 by Sir E Guy Dawber for Major G C S Hodgson. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, topped with a plain clay tile roof that is hipped and features a wide eaves overhang. The house has stone chimney stacks with moulded caps.
The building is two storeys high with an attic and has a four-bay entrance elevation facing north, where the third bay projects. The façade includes an ashlar plinth and small pane casement windows set in voussoired segmental arched openings, with three-light windows in bays one and two, and a two-light window in bay two. Bay three features a six-panel door within a wood surround that has fluted pilasters and a pediment, along with a 20-pane sash window above it. There is a semi-circular three-light window in the attic gable, and bay four has single-light windows in the corners on both levels. Dormer windows with lead flat roofs flank the gable of bay three, while the outer chimney stacks are notably tall and connected to the main roof by short false roofs.
Additionally, there is a single-storey L-plan extension added to the east gable in 1925. The other elevations of the house maintain a similar character. The interior of Eyewell House remains largely unaltered. The property is currently held by the Ministry of Defence (Admiralty).
