Description

Nos 1 and 2 Colyton Terrace is a pair of houses built in 1830 in a villa style. They were constructed by Mr Linton, a Scot, as recorded by Sweetman in his 1830 history of Wincanton. The front elevation is rendered and colourwashed, with a Welsh slate hipped roof and brick chimney stacks. The houses are two storeys and two bays wide each. They have a plinth and rusticated quoins. The windows are 12-pane sashes in plain openings; those in the lower outer bays are wider, and the windows to No 1 have ornamental frets to the heads of the reveals. A six-panel door is set in a recess with a rectangular fanlight in each inner bay, the one at No 2 having margins. The interior is not visible. A boundary wall of cut and squared stone with plain coping, approximately 1.75 metres high and topped with simple wrought iron railings, runs 8 metres to the south. Square central gate piers are constructed of ashlar and topped with simple pyramidal caps. This boundary wall and railings are important to the setting of the houses. Note that the remaining block of three houses in Colyton Terrace has been significantly altered and is not included in the listing.
