Description

East Gate is a former toll house, likely built in 1791. It features a rendered exterior with ashlar lining and a Welsh slate roof that has a large eaves overhang and an ornamental bargeboard on the north front, while the rear is hipped. The building has a brick chimney stack and stands two storeys high with two bays on each face. The windows are pointed segmental arches with 'Y' tracery and slim surrounds. On the north side, the lower bay contains a plain boarded door that matches the arched surround of the windows. The interior has not been seen. This gate was established in 1791 by the Wincanton Trust, as noted in G. Sweetman's "History of Wincanton," published around 1904.
