Description
Canton Cafe is a house and shop dating from the early 19th century, designed in the Regency style. It features a rendered front, a flat roof, and a brick chimney stack. The building stands three storeys high and has two bays. On the ground floor, there is a boarded door to the left, flanked by panelled pilasters that lead to console brackets and a moulded projecting continuous flat hood. This is followed by two semi-bow windows, each with 12 panes, where the outer panes are set in a quarter circle, and a pair of glazed doors with a plain fanlight above. The first floor has two similar bow windows with a central 12-pane sash and curved 4-pane ends, all under a continuous fascia with a flat hood. The second floor features two 9-pane sash windows in plain openings. The flat roof detracts from the building's otherwise interesting character, but it may have been added in the early 20th century, similar to No. 5 Market Place. The interior has not been seen.
