Description

These stables, located about 150 meters north of Hatch Park, were built in the late 18th century and have been partly converted into a dwelling. They were altered and enlarged in the mid-20th century. The structure is made of squared and coursed lias stone, with roughcast above a rubble plinth on the west front surrounding a courtyard. It features hipped slate roofs with overhanging eaves and soffit boards, and brick stacks that rise from the eaves at the west end.

The building is arranged in a U-shape facing west, with the north wing serving as stables, a central carriage house with a central canopy, and the south wing converted into a flat with a one-bay extension. It has two storeys and a symmetrical layout with one, three, one, and one bays. The gabled ends include recessed semicircular niches with tall three-light windows that have multiple panes, while the upper lights in the center are blocked. There are three pairs of diagonally boarded double doors with bullseye windows above them. The central 19th-century porte cochere has a patterned slate roof supported by cast iron columns with decorative bargeboards, and there is a two-storey, one-bay addition on the outer right side.

On the rear elevation to the east, there is a blind three-bay arcade with semi-circular headed niches in the outer bays. The stables are said to still contain their original fittings. These stables were originally associated with Hatch Park, which was destroyed by fire in 1942.
