Description
Thornes House is a house from the 18th century that was enlarged in the early 19th century. It features a rendered exterior that is grooved to resemble ashlar stone, with quoins and a distinctive pedimented bay. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, and there are brick stacks. The original 18th-century design has a "U"-shaped plan with a central block facing south, and the early 19th-century extension adds two bays to the east. The building is two stories tall and has a layout of two bays, one bay, and four bays. It includes 12-pane sash windows, except for a round-headed window in the pedimented bay above the doorway, which is flanked by canted bays with single hung 9-pane sash windows and blind boxes. The entrance features a gabled porch with a slate roof, supported by octagonal wooden piers on a dwarf wall. The door is panelled and has a fanlight above it. The house was formerly known as Pencraig.
