Description
The War Memorial located in the churchyard of St Michael's Church was erected in 1921 to commemorate those who lost their lives in the First World War, with additional inscriptions added after the Second World War. The memorial is made of granite and is positioned just inside the west gate of the churchyard. It features a Latin cross with decorative foliate ends on the arms, and a tapering, chamfered shaft that has broach stops at the lower part, set into a square plinth. The west face of the plinth has a relief inscription that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WARS 1914-1919. 1939-1945." The names, ranks, and regiments of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the north and south sides, while the names of those who died in the Second World War are carved on the east side beneath the dates 1939-1945. The plinth rests on a three-stepped, octagonal base.
