Description

This building on the north side of Market Place is a commercial property dating back to the medieval period, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is timber-framed, with stone-built party walls and a front elevation rendered with 19th-century stucco. The roof is covered in pantiles, and a brick stack, which has been lowered, is on the right side.

The building has a jettied frontage of two storeys facing the street. The gable above features 19th-century open cusped bargeboards and oversails at first floor level. A moulded bressumer runs along the first floor. A stone-built party wall is on the right-hand side, resting on a medieval stone corbel which has a carving of a man and woman in period dress. The ground floor has a flat-headed entrance with a half-glazed timber door and a fixed-light shop window, likely dating to the 19th century. At first floor are two six-over-six sash windows with thin glazing bars, and a round-headed sash window in the gable above. The interior was not inspected in 2006.

The building's significance lies in its good example of medieval architecture, retaining much of its historic fabric. The stone carving of medieval figures on the street frontage is a particularly notable feature. It has group value with other listed buildings in the area, especially numbers 1 and 2 Market Place, and contributes significantly to the character of the historic core of Glastonbury, which is a designated Conservation Area.
