Description

This is a milepost located on the B3170, dating from around 1840. It was made by Allen and Co of Taunton, who were iron founders. The milepost has a triangular shape and is hollow in section with a sloping top. The plinth, which bears the name of the iron founders, is set below ground level. It features raised lettering that reads "TAUNTON 6" on the right side and "HONITON 12 3/8" on the left side. The Honiton and Ilminster Trust received permission to turnpike this section of road from Shoreditch, south of Taunton, to the Devon border through an Act of 1840. An almost complete set of mileposts remains along this road.
