Description

This is a milepost dating from around 1840, made by Allen and Co of Taunton, who were iron founders. The milepost is made of cast iron and has a triangular shape in plan, with a hollow section and a sloping top. The plinth, which bears the name of the iron founders, is set beneath ground level. It features raised lettering that reads "TAUNTON 8" on the right side and "HONITON 10 3/8" on the left side. The Honiton and Ilminster Trust received permission to turnpike the road section from Shoreditch, south of Taunton, to the Devon border through an Act of 1840. An almost complete set of mileposts remains along this road.
