Description
Higher Fyfett Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1677, with restorations in 1861 and further work including reroofing from 1976 to 1980. The building is constructed from chert stone random rubble, which was previously rendered, and features Ham stone dressings. The windows have renewed stone mullions, and the roof is covered with concrete double Roman tiles. There are stone stacks located to the left of the through passage and at the center of the cross wing, with evidence of a former stack at the right gable end that has a projection for a bread oven.
The layout consists of a two-cell plan with a cross passage and a two-cell cross wing on the left, with a former dairy located at the rear right. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a facade with one bay on the left gable front. This gable features a square plaque at the apex inscribed with "Built 1677 Rest. 1861" in incised lettering. The windows are all three-light chamfered stone mullions without hood moulds, and the entrance is located center right with a square-headed doorway that has a late 20th-century door designed in a period style. There are reconstructed stone mullions on the returns and two single light windows inserted into the right gable end. The interior has not been seen. Historical records, such as The Masters and Day Map of Somerset published in 1782, indicate that there was a house of some importance at Fyfett, but it is unclear if this refers to the current farmhouse or a previous structure that stood to the south. Additionally, there are monuments in Otterford churchyard dedicated to the Willie family of Fyfett.
