Description

Otterford Mills is a mill and miller's house that has been converted into a dwelling. It dates from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed and dressed chert stone and features a triple Roman tiled roof that is hipped to the left, with a half-hipped west wing and a gabled east wing that has coped verges. The east wing has assorted clay tiles, and there is a brick stack rising from the eaves on the left return. The structure is U-shaped and faces southwest, with the ground level dropping steeply to the west towards the river. Access is provided from the road on the east side at first floor level.

The southwest front of the building has two storeys and is arranged in a 1:2 bay configuration. There is evidence of rebuilding in the end bay on the right. It features 3-light leaded wooden casements flanking the remains of a 4-light casement, with a ground floor that includes 3 and 4-light windows to the left of the entrance to the dwelling. The entrance has a plank door and a cantilevered corrugated iron porch, with an early 20th-century 2-light window to the right and a segmental-headed doorway also on the right. The corner at the first floor level is chamfered.

The right return, which faces the road, is a single storey with an attic. It has a left gabled loft opening with a pointed arch head window that may be reused, and a mid-20th century concrete block mounting block type construction for milk churns, which is not of special interest. There are four bays on the right, including a square-headed doorway. The left return features a first floor loft opening, a 3-light window to the right, and a ground floor square-headed doorway flanked by windows. There is also a lean-to at the gable end with a corrugated iron roof.

The interior was not accessible at the time of the survey and is generally in poor condition as of August 1985. It is believed that the waterwheel survives in situ at the east gable end, and the remains of the mill leat are still visible.
