Description

Milepost located at National Grid Reference ST 2401 1238, dating from around 1840, made by Allen and Co of Taunton, iron founders. It is constructed from cast iron and has a triangular shape with a hollow section and a sloping top. The plinth, which bears the name of the iron founders, is set below ground level. The milepost features raised lettering, with "TAUNTON 9" inscribed on the right side and "HONITON 9 3/8" on the left. This milepost is part of a nearly complete set along the road, which was turnpiked by the Honiton and Ilminster Trust following an Act of 1840, allowing for the road from Shoreditch, south of Taunton, to the Devon border to be improved.
