Description

Stout Mill is an early to mid-19th century mill and mill house constructed of local stone and flint rubble, with stone rubble stacks topped with 19th and 20th century brick and a slate roof. The building has a roughly L-shaped plan. The house section faces north and has a three-room plan, with heated gable-end stacks to the end rooms. The entrance lobby, containing the main staircase, is situated between the centre and right rooms. The main block extends to the right (west) as a mill, but the primary mill space is located in a crosswing projecting to the rear, at the right end. The house is two storeys high, while the mill has two storeys, with additional loft space.

The north-facing house front has a four-window arrangement of original casement windows containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. The left-hand two window bays have flat stone arches above the windows. A 19th century door is located right of centre, with a small window above it illuminating the stairwell. To the right of the house is a mill storage area, featuring a door with a window to its right, and above it a loading hatch with a window to the right. Both the house and mill sections have gable ends.

During the survey, the interior was not inspected, but the building appears to have undergone only minor modernisation. The mill is reported to retain its original machinery and water wheel. Stout Mill was historically used for flour milling. Records of ownership and occupancy exist from 1782 to 1931.
