Description

Timewell and Timewell Cottage are a pair of cottages dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with later alterations. In the late 20th century, the street entrances were moved to the rear, and the facade was refenestrated. The cottages are rendered over random rubble and feature a thatched roof that is half hipped to the left, with brick stacks located in the left cross gable end, centre right, and right gable end. The original layout is unclear, as the long range facing the road has undergone many internal rearrangements.

The cottages are one and a half storeys high and have a facade with a 1:2:2 bay arrangement. The first floor has late 20th-century 2-light leaded casements, with the left bay of the cross gable lit only on the left return. The facade projects forward at the end of the two bays on the right. The ground floor features a 20th-century 2-light casement in the left end bay, an unlit cross gable with a lancet on the left return, a centre 19th-century 3-light leaded iron casement, and a 2-light casement to the right. The end block has three 20th-century 2- and 3-light casements, lit on the right return and gable end. There is a later addition at the rear.

The interior has only been partially viewed. The left half contains two pairs of jointed crucks, with one exposed post rising from the ground floor, and it is believed that the building contains at least three crucks. Overall, the cottages present a long and picturesque range. A photograph in the National Monuments Record shows the cottages before the late 20th-century alterations.
